Ever since humans began exploring and gathering items to bring back home, the need for carrying solutions has been evident. Over time, various types of gear bags have evolved, driven by necessity and adapted for ease of use. Initially, bags were probably made from animal hides, gathered at the top and carried over the shoulder. These simple designs evolved into specialized bags tailored to specific needs: backpacks for distributing load during long journeys, and duffel bags for transporting bulkier items. The most significant advancements in gear bag design have stemmed from innovations in military equipment.
The earliest evidence of backpacks dates back to 3300 BC, when they were used by hunters and gatherers. The first military backpacks, called rucksacks, were made of sheet metal and used during the American Civil War to carry medical supplies and weapons. However, they were uncomfortable and had limited organization. In 1908, Norwegian inventor Ole Bergan created an ergonomic backpack by bending juniper wood to follow the contours of the wearer's back.
Duffel bags were first used by soldiers in World War I and World War II, and were popularized by their widespread use. They were made from canvas, were durable and water-resistant, and had a simple cylindrical design with a drawstring closure. After the wars, many veterans continued to use their military-issued duffel bags, which led to their popularity in civilian life.
The U.S. Double Bag knapsack was introduced in 1855 and became standard for the Union Army during the American Civil War. It may have set the precedent for soft packs with multiple compartments. Duluth Pack is the oldest canvas and leather bag and pack manufacturer in the United States, having been in operation since 1882.
